One of our Discord members asked us that. It’s a fair question, and the answer changes how you should actually use the platform.
Pre-Match vs. Live: What’s the Difference
Pre-match odds are set before kickoff and updated as new information comes in (team news, weather, market money) right up until the whistle. Live (in-play) odds are the same idea, except now they’re reacting to the match itself: a goal, a red card, a shift in momentum, second by second.
Both are markets. Both move. The only difference is what’s driving the movement.
How Fast Is “Live”?
This is the part that actually matters. A live odds feed is only useful if it’s fast enough to catch before the price you saw is gone.
We track Pinnacle’s live odds at under 600 milliseconds. By the time you notice a price, it’s already reflecting what just happened on the pitch. Other sharp books we monitor for in-play markets update up to 5 seconds behind that, still fast enough to catch most of the value before soft books adjust.
A Worked Example: What Happens in the Seconds After a Red Card
Take Lille OSC vs. Real Betis Seville from the Champions League matchday on September 8. LOSC’s Ethan Mbappé was sent off in the 56th minute on the back of a game that had already swung.
Going a man down while already chasing the game is exactly the kind of moment that should move a line hard, and on BetUnfair’s Graph Center, that’s exactly what you can see happen on the Full Time Result – Away market (Real Betis to win).
Lille got ahead by scoring in the 12th minute. 25 minutes after the kickoff, that market was sitting near 7.89 on Betis, with a limit of about 2,031. As the match played out and the red card landed, the price didn’t drift down, it fell off a cliff. By the time the market settled, Betis’s odds to win had collapsed all the way to 1.19.
BetUnfair’s graph recorded 251 price ticks on that single selection over the course of the match, each one a re-price as new information hit the market. That’s the “lag” made visible..

Why the Lag Exists?
Pre-match, a sharp book has hours (sometimes days) to build a number. It can factor in team news, injuries, weather, historical results, and where the market’s money is landing, all before a ball is kicked.
In-play, that entire process has to happen in the time it takes a referee to reach for a card. The match state is changing constantly (score, cards, substitutions, momentum, even a player picking up a knock) and a live pricing model has to re-run its numbers against all of it in real time.
Sharp books like Pinnacle build for exactly this: automated live models plugged straight into match data feeds, repricing the instant something changes. Soft books are structurally set up differently: slower internal risk processes, wider safety buffers before they’ll move a live price or feeds that are effectively copying a sharp book’s number.
None of that is a problem pre-match, where there’s time to spare. In-play, with the game changing by the second, that same caution is what turns into the lag you can trade against.
Watching Manually?
On a normal matchday across the leagues we track, you’re looking at dozens of matches live at once each with its own set of in-play markets (match winner, next goal, total goals, corners, cards, handicaps). Multiply that out and you’re easily into the hundreds of prices moving at any given moment, across 10+ sharp books and 15+ soft books.
To catch the kind of gap in the example above by hand you’d need every one of those markets open, on every book, at the same time, and you’d need to notice a price change within a few seconds of it happening, every time, for the entire match, on every match being played that day. That’s not a strategy problem, it’s just a task a person can’t physically do.
