On a betting exchange every bet is matched against another bettor, and the amount matched is public. That makes exchange volume one of the few places you can see real money entering a market as it happens.
A volume spike is a short burst where far more money is matched on one outcome than that market normally trades. It is usually the footprint of sharp money or fresh information, and it often shows up before bookmakers have finished moving their prices. Pair it with our dropping odds alerts to see both the money and the price react.

Syndicates and sharp bettors hit the exchange with size. Because exchanges publish real matched volume, that money is visible the moment it is matched, often before bookmakers move their prices.
Lineups, injuries, rotation, weather. Whoever hears it first bets it first, and the matched volume jumps well above its usual level within seconds.
Odds only change once enough money has been absorbed. Watching volume shows you the pressure building, not just the price after it has already shifted.
Raw multipliers swing wildly between markets, so we rate each spike by how unusual it is for that market. More flames means a rarer, stronger move.
Clearly above normal trading. The widest net: good for niche markets or when you want to see everything.
A strong burst for this market. Roughly the top quarter of all spikes we detect.
Rare and heavy. Roughly the top 10% of spikes. Worth stopping what you are doing for.
The top ~1%. Someone just put serious money down on this outcome.
A spike is a trigger to look closer. Here is how to turn it into an edge.
Money floods the exchange first. Soft bookmakers often keep the old, bigger price for a short window. A spike tells you where to look before they adjust.
Every alert links to the odds history. If the price shortened on heavy volume, the move tends to stick. Big volume with no price change is a different story.
A volume spike next to a Pinnacle dropping odds alert or limit change is the market agreeing with itself. Combine alert types to filter for the strongest setups.
Set a minimum matched volume so spikes on thin, illiquid markets never reach you, and raise the severity tier until only the moves you care about come through.
Configure once, then let it run. Three steps from setup to actionable alerts.
Pick sports, leagues, markets and periods, how close to kick-off, a minimum matched volume, and the spike size (Minor, Elevated, High or Extreme) you want to hear about.
We measure money matched on every outcome in one-minute windows and keep a rolling baseline of what is normal for that market, including its usual bursts.
When a minute is far outside that baseline, the alert lands in your dashboard with severity, money matched, total volume and the odds history one click away.
Watching an exchange ladder by hand or alerting on fixed amounts buries the real signal in noise. Here’s the difference.

Everything you need to know about volume spikes and how BetUnfair detects them.
A volume spike is a sudden burst of money being matched on one outcome of a betting exchange market, far above what that market normally trades. It is often the first visible sign that informed bettors are acting on an outcome, or that news has just broken.
We track money matched on every outcome in one-minute windows and maintain a rolling baseline of each market’s normal trading, including how bursty it usually is. A spike is flagged only when the current minute is far outside that baseline, so a busy Premier League match and a quiet lower-league game are each judged against their own normal.
A fixed threshold is meaningless across markets. €10,000 in a minute is routine on a big Premier League match and enormous on a second-division handicap. Measuring each market against its own history surfaces the moves that are actually unusual. You can still add a minimum matched volume on top to ignore tiny markets.
They describe how unusual the spike is compared to the market’s normal swings. Minor is clearly above normal, Elevated is roughly the top quarter of spikes, High roughly the top 10% and Extreme roughly the top 1%. You choose the minimum tier per alert configuration.
Volume spike alerts run on Betfair Exchange, where matched volume is public and real. You can filter by sport, league, market and period, the same way as our other alert types.
Not on its own. A spike tells you money is moving, not why. The best use is as a trigger to look: check the odds history, see whether sharp bookmakers have moved, and compare against slower bookmakers still offering the old price. No signal guarantees profit.
Volume spike alerts are included in the Pro and Sharp plans, alongside limit change and closed market alerts.
