Settlement Risk: The Bet You Can Win and Still Lose

July 21, 2026

Last weekend at UFC 329, Max Holloway beat Conor McGregor. It wasn’t close. McGregor’s knee gave out, the fight was stopped at 1 minute 9 seconds into the first round, and the UFC’s final result shows a Holloway win by TKO.

Yet, some bettors who backed Holloway still experienced a loss.

At BetUnfair we won’t say who was right in that specific marketplace event. What matters here is the massive trap it exposes, and it is one of the most ignored risks in sports betting.

The Main Rule of Settle: You don’t get paid for being right about the fight. You get paid for being right about how the fight gets written down. Those are two completely different bets, but most people only think about the first one.

What Settlement Actually Is

Every betting site or traditional bookmaker has tp answer one question every time an event comes to an end: What actually happened?

To answer this, every platform relies on a combination of two things:

  • The resolution source: This is the authority that the bookmakers trusts and based its decision on. For an MMA fight, that’s almost always the events’ official record, for example the UFC’s official sheet. It’s not what you watched live on television. It’s not what the commentators argued about. And it’s definitely not what a viral clip on social media claims. It’s what the organization’s published record states, nothing else counts.
  • The resolution rule: The exact sentence that decides how the bookmaker turns a real event into a win or a loss on your bet. It covers the messy situations too. If the fight ends without a clear winner, the event is canceled, pushed back or the result changes months later because of a failed drug test, everyone just gets half their stake back.

There’s also a deadline. If the UFC hasn’t confirmed the official result by that deadline, the bet also settles 50-50, even if a winner becomes clear afterwards. Once the deadline passes, a late confirmation doesn’t count anymore.

A bettor could correctly guess the winner and still not get paid the normal way, purely because of a date or a technical clause, not because their pick was wrong.

A Real-World Lesson From UFC 329

Here’s a real example, from the published rules of a prediction market that ran a line on this exact fight.

The rules said the bet settles on the official winner the UFC declares. If the fight ends in a draw, or a no contest, or gets pushed back past July 25, the bet settles 50-50 instead, meaning everyone gets half their stake back.

Read that again. Under those rules, you could correctly predict that Holloway would beat McGregor, watch him win in real life, and still not get paid properly. All because of a date on a calendar, or a technical rule about how the fight ended. The bet wasn’t decided by what happened in the cage. It was decided by the rules written on paper.

What You Saw in the OctagonWhat the Rulebook Actually Graded
McGregor lands badly hurting himself, blows out his knee, and the referee calls the fight.Did the official result get confirmed before the platform’s cutoff time?
A clear, undeniable first-round TKO victory for Max Holloway.Did the way the fight ended count as an injury or retirement under the rules?

5 Ways Settlement Rules Catch You Out

  1. Method of victory clauses: A TKO caused by an injury can be understood in different ways. Depending on the wording, a bookmaker might call it a normal TKO, a retirement, or a technical decision. If your bet needs something more than a simple “who wins,” you’re fully dependent on whichever option the referee picks.
  2. Draw and no contest traps: Many venues turn a simple draw or a no contest into a void bet, or a 50-50 split. Your pick on the underdog might have been completely right, but your payout still turns into a refund.
  3. Strict expiry deadlines: Every prediction market has a cutoff time written into its rules, a specific date and time after which the market settles no matter what. The problem is that real events don’t always cooperate with that clock. A fight gets delayed by an injury, an official result takes longer than usual to get published. If any of that pushes past the cutoff, the market can settle as if the event never produced a result at all, even though it did, just late.
  4. Overturned results: A failed drug test weeks later can flip an official ruling. Some bookmakers will re-pay bets after that. Most won’t look back once a bet is settled. It’s worth knowing which rule your platform follows before you place any money.
  5. Different rules under the same brand: The same betting house can run different products under different regulators. The rules covering your money depend on the website or app you’re using, not on the parent company’s general reputation.

Your Pre-Bet Settlement Checklist

Before you place your next big bet, take two minutes to safeguard your position:

  • Audit Three Things First: Open up the platform’s Terms & Conditions and find three specific things: the resolution source (who decides what officially happened), the void or no contest rule (what happens if the event doesn’t produce a clean result), and the settlement deadline (the exact date and time after which the market settles no matter what). It takes about two minutes, and almost nobody does it.
  • Screenshot the Rules: Terms and conditions on a website can be edited or “clarified” at any point, even while an event is still live. If a support desk later disputes what the rule said, your word against theirs won’t get you anywhere. A screenshot with a visible timestamp, taken the moment you place your bet, is the only proof you’ll actually have.
  • Prioritize Simple Wording: A market that resolves on something plain, like “the official winner,” carries a lot less risk than one built from several clauses about method, timing, or specific rounds. Every extra clause is one more way the settlement can go against you even when your read on the event itself was correct.
  • Lower Your Niche Bets: Bets like method of victory, exact round groupings, or anything tied to a strict deadline carry more of this hidden risk than a plain match winner. Put less money on them than you would on a clean, simple bet, regardless of how good the odds look.
  • Diversify Across Platforms: Keeping your entire bankroll on a single site exposes you entirely to one single settlement desk and rulebook. Spreading your action across different books protects your capital from an isolated decision.
  • Locate the Dispute Window Early: Most sportsbooks enforce a strict 24-to-48-hour window to formally contest a graded loss. Find that submission link early one, rather than trying to hunt it down late Saturday night when you’re in a bad mood.

Where BetUnfair Fits Into This

BetUnfair is an odds monitoring platform, not a bookmaker or an exchange. We never take the other side of your action, we never hold your deposits, and we never decide who wins a match. We track clean live pricing data across more than ten elite sharp books so you can spot profit-making movements instantly.

This means we can’t protect you from a poorly worded bookmaker, you’re the only who can do that.

What we can do is show you the exact same sporting event priced across multiple global markets simultaneously. This turns your choice of bookmaker into an informed business decision rather than a lazy gambling mistake.

Because we don’t profit off your losses or take a cut of the settlement pool, our incentives align completely with yours.

FAQ

What is settlement risk?

The underlying risk that your bet resolves as a loss or a partial refund despite your predicted outcome occurring, solely due to how a platform’s internal rules define, time-stamp, and record that specific result.

What is a resolution source?

The definitive, governing sporting authority (like a league or commission) that a bookmaker officially binds themselves to when verifying what occurred. It completely supersedes the live broadcast or fan opinions.

What is a resolution rule?

The operational fine print that commands how a bet slip is settled during unusual outcomes like injuries, early stoppages, weather delays, or post-fight commission overrides.

Why did some Holloway backers lose despite the clear TKO?

Certain decentralized platforms utilized specialized contract rules and a strict timestamp cutoff that ran into conflict with the sudden nature of the injury stoppage.

Does BetUnfair settle or hold my wagers?

No. BetUnfair does not process transactions or grade slips. We provide pure, independent market data and odds-movement graphs across the sharp market so you can optimize your execution.
